Dopplecity

Welcome to Dopple City, a place where reality is as fluid as water and dreams become reality. Nestled in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, Dopple City is a metropolis like no other, where the line between fantasy and reality is blurred. Here, the streets change their layout to accommodate the desires of its inhabitants, and the buildings shift their architecture to suit the mood of the city. With its vibrant cultural districts, eclectic neighborhoods, and mysterious landmarks, Dopple City offers endless opportunities for adventure and exploration. But beware, for beneath its charming facade lies a city haunted by its past, where the ghosts of old stories and forgotten memories roam the streets, whispering secrets of a time long gone. Welcome to Dopple City, where anything is possible, and reality is just a suggestion.

Overview of Vancouver in the 21st Century

In the 21st century, Vancouver was a thriving metropolis known for its stunning natural beauty, diverse culture, and progressive values. The city was a hub of technology, arts, and entertainment, attracting people from around the world to live, work, and play.

However, Vancouver also faced challenges, including homelessness, income inequality, and environmental issues. Despite these challenges, the city remained resilient, with its residents working together to create a better future for all.

The Change During the Hodgepocalypse

The World's Fair transformed a hardworking city into a shining star on the West Coast. The Expo Dom, a structure with a nuclear magical effect, was the catalyst. Media influence surged, accelerating the city's metamorphosis. A magical anomaly, coupled with a high death toll, erased the city's original identity, reshaping it to please its population and adapting to their needs.

The Nature of the Dimensional Gauntlet

Sealed in a Dimensional Gauntlet, Doppel City is a surreal and ever-changing metropolis that reflects the desires, fears, and dreams of its inhabitants. Buildings shift and rearrange themselves, streets twist and turn unexpectedly, and landmarks appear and disappear. Despite its haunting nature, the city maintains a charming and picturesque facade, luring adventurers into its depths.

Overview: Characters in Doppel City can use their actions to influence the environment around them, shaping it to their advantage or changing its nature to suit their needs.

Mechanical Effects: When a character attempts to influence the environment, they make a skill check based on the nature of their action. The DM sets the DC based on the complexity and impact of the desired change.

Examples of Actions and Skills:

·       Shape Building: Use Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) to rearrange parts of a building, creating new paths or barriers.

·       Alter Terrain: Use Intelligence (Nature) to change the landscape, creating hills, valleys, or forests.

·       Manipulate Weather: Use Wisdom (Survival) to change the weather, creating rain, fog, or sunshine.

·       Summon Objects: Use Charisma (Performance) to summon objects or creatures from the environment.

Success: If the character succeeds on the skill check, the desired change occurs, altering the environment in a meaningful way. This could open up new paths, create obstacles for enemies, or provide resources for the party.

Failure: If the character fails the skill check, the DM can determine a negative consequence, such as the change not occurring as intended or attracting unwanted attention.

Limitations: To prevent abuse, the DM can limit the use of this mechanic based on the character's level, resources, or the narrative context. Additionally, some changes may require special conditions or items to be successful.

Roleplaying and Narrative Impact: Encourage players to describe their actions creatively, tying them to their character's backstory or motivations. This can enhance the narrative impact of their environmental influence and deepen their connection to the world of Doppel City.

This mechanic can add a strategic element to gameplay, encouraging players to think creatively and work together to shape the environment to their advantage. It also reinforces the theme of Doppel City as a dynamic and ever-changing city, where the actions of its inhabitants can have a lasting impact on its landscape.

The Columbian Wastelands

In the wake of the Hodgepocalypse, the former province of Canada has become a mystical and perilous wonderland known as the Columbia Wasteland. It is now a patchwork of magic, technology and ancient forces.  The land is teeming with supernatural phenomena, mystical creatures and remnants of a world altered by catastrophic events.  Adventurers entering the Columbian Wastelands are thrus into a realm of danger where the very fabric of Reality has been reshaped.

The Regions of Woe

The Hodgepocalypse left its mark.  Seismic activity skyrocketed causing a massive loss of population, followed by intensive province wide forest fires, and that’s before the return of magic changed the region irreversibly.  While the area has stabilized since those dark times, it has affected the land drastically:

The Cannibal Coast:

Stretching along the western shoreline of British Columbia, the Cannibal Coast earned its grim moniker due to the presence of deadly predators and unsettling rumors of cannibalistic creatures. The untamed wilderness is teeming with magical anomalies that have given rise to fearsome, man-eating birds and other mysterious beings.  The Cannibal Coast is shrouded in mystery and rumor. Stories of cannibalism, blood rituals, and strange ceremonies are whispered among the settlements that dot the coastline. While some of these tales may be exaggerated or based on fear, there are instances where the gruesome rumors are grounded. The characters must navigate through a web of truth and fiction as they explore the treacherous terrain.

The Islands of Discovery:

Situated off the Cannibal Coast, the Islands of Discovery are a series of secluded landmasses housing the Elysium Corporation's clandestine research facilities. These geodesic domes and controlled experiments provide insight into the Corporation’s true motives in the Hodgepocalypse British Columbia region.

Coast and Cascade Mountains:

While this mountain chain is responsible for the rainforest along the coast, it is also a place of high volcanic activity.  The Garabaldi Volcanic belt belches white ash from time to time and often act as portals to other dimensions.  Where there isn’t fire, there’s ice as numerous icefields and glaciers spread out through this region. Even the comparatively dormant mountains are home to Ungo Communities as well.

Interior Plateau:

This region is split up into multiple high elevation areas of habitation.  This is the new heartland of the region as the settlements are most likely to be inhabited in this region.  This is an area of farmland an small towns.  Sections of the plateau have become floating terraces, hovering above the ground. These terraces are accessible through magical elevators that respond to the intentions of those seeking passage. Each floating terrace harbors unique ecosystems and surprises.  The plateau resonates with a harmonic echo, a melodic hum that responds to the thoughts and emotions of those who traverse the region. The echo can be harnessed by skilled individuals for communication, healing, or even manipulating the environment.  Canyons crisscross the plateau, and the winds that rush through them carry whispers of ancient secrets. Those who navigate the windswept canyons may uncover hidden truths about the plateau's mystical history.

Okanagan Valley:

The valley is now dotted with vineyards, each controlled by a different faction of post-apocalyptic survivors. These factions, once ordinary people, have developed unique abilities or characteristics based on the mystical energies present in the region. The wines produced by each faction are sought after for their magical properties, from healing elixirs to potions that enhance one's senses.  In response to the unpredictable and magical nature of the land and each other, residents have developed floating farms. These farms hover above the ground, moving with the ebb and flow of magical energies. They produce crops that are not only sustaining but also imbued with unique properties.

Northern Wilderness:

The vast northern reaches of the Columbian Wasteland are sparsely populated, with expansive forests, rivers, and wildlife.  It is known for the Aurora Nexus, the northern lights, already a natural wonder, have become a magical phenomenon known as the Aurora Nexus. This swirling display of colors is a gateway to other dimensions, and during certain celestial alignments, creatures, and energies from these realms spill into the wilderness. The Aurora Nexus is both a mesmerizing spectacle and a source of great peril.  Another side effect of the region, is the wildlife in the northern wilderness has adapted to the magical energies, evolving into luminescent creatures that illuminate the night.  This area is also an extension of the boreal forests and includes both normal conifers and the psychic crystal forests patches that have their own share of dangers and opportunity.

Rocky Mountains:

While a stone’s throw away from Jargon’s realms in Alberta, they have their own unique properties.  The peaks of the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia are ephemeral, materializing and dematerializing at irregular intervals. This phenomenon adds an element of unpredictability to the landscape, with adventurers never entirely sure which summits will be visible or accessible at any given time.  Deep within the mountainous terrain, hidden astral passages connect the British Columbia Rockies to mystical realms. Travelers who discover these passages can traverse between the physical and astral planes, encountering otherworldly beings and uncovering ancient secrets.  Some of the mountain peaks are crowned with celestial calderas that radiate celestial energy. These calderas serve as conduits to the realms beyond the stars, attracting extraterrestrial entities and providing a source of potent magical energy for those who can harness it.

These towering structures, stacked high in crumbling ports, offer strong defensive positions, while the rugged terrain and surrounding islands act as natural barriers against raiders and mutant threats.

In the desolate landscape of the west coast, Prince Rupert remains a critical outpost for what little remains of civilization, serving as a waypoint for those daring to navigate the harsh post-apocalyptic wilderness.

Ungo Settlements:

The Ungo are incredibly populous but scattered across the Columbian wastelands.  Ungo settlements prioritize blending with the natural environment, incorporating camouflage techniques to remain hidden from potential threats.  Clearings or central areas within Ungo settlements could serve as communal spaces for gatherings, ceremonies, or shared activities.  Occasionally they setup Guardian Posts: Ungo may establish strategic vantage points or guardian posts at the outskirts of their territories to monitor potential dangers and protect their communities.

Players exploring Vanderhoof may discover hidden portals, connecting this seemingly ordinary town to distant realms. The Void Covenant - An Introduction.

During the Times of Revelations, the dimensional Portal known as the void tore through the fabric of reality releasing the insectoid horde.  They are common in the Sahara Desert of Africa where they are an oncoming swarm that threatens the entire continent.  However, in other areas, they have had limited success due to other power players and natural environments being not friendly to their standard procedures.  They are found in the northern part of the former province of Alberta where they have adapted the land to their own way of thinking.

A False Silence.  The species of the Void Covenant talk with each other through complex pheromones.  To an outsider, it seems eerily quiet, but those that can pick up the scents, they can hear the commands, yells, and arguments that you would see from just about any species.

As a result, they can leave scent markers as a bonus action by emitting a large quantity of pheremones into a point or object. A scent marker will last for 24 hours or until the point or object is washed or magically cleaned. Scent markers “read” as a single word or emotion.  To understand these communications without being a species of the Void Covenant, they must pass a scent based DC 22 Wisdom (Perception) check.

Caste of Function.  The Void Covenant is based on caste.  The varying insectoid species are born to perform a function within its society.  While there is a certain degree of wiggle room within one’s caste, the biology and training often limit what they view as options.  Note that this cast includes smart humanoids-insects and more monstrous insect mounts.

However, this has not meant complete harmony.  Many of the castes hate the current pecking order and jockey to change the overall structure to change the natural order of things.  This has only been exasperated since coming to Hodgepocalypse earth where rebellions and revolutions have become all too common.

Invasive Species.  When they invade a new territory, they bend the land to their will.  What was once boreal forest in northern Alberta is now a strange swampland filled with bright colors created from their consumption of local flora.  Their massive geometric towers are made of mud and resin and descend into the depths of the earth, filling the underworld with tunnels and chasms.

Void Covenant Technology.  The Void Covenant uses a technology best described as techno – organic.  They use chitin composites, resin, and organically mixed chemical mixtures to create weapons and equipment.  They create much of their equipment using a molding process.  They also breed massive amount of insectoid life that are used that is dissected for “moving parts” This is then put together using assembly lines of loyal Covenant workers working in shifts.  This allows them to produce material at levels that puts most industrial factories to shame.

Allied Species

Besides the Void Covenant creatures found below, the following are also of particular note:

Glitterpillar.

The Void Covenant find these creatures beautiful and often end up as living ornaments inside their hives.

Gunship Dragonfly

The Void Covenant often tame these beasts and used them to soften targets.

Sick Slug

These foul creatures are bred by the Void Covenant and released onto the land to start the terraforming process of the land.
