New Hodgepocalypse species - 5e - Marlarkoids

Note: This race was inspired by a live showing of the “Irrelevant Show”, a Canadian comedy troupe, and is made with intent of being a transformative artistic work.

Background
Marlarkoids claim they are a space fairing alien species that landed on earth before the revelations, sometime in the very early 21st century.  They took on human vestiges to walk among us for a short time before being forced to leave because of what is now only known as interspecies difficulties with some of their young ones, the rest of the details where official redacted both by human and Marlarkoids officials at the time.  Despite this, they also claim they have visited earth occasionally over the decades leading up to the revelations, just to check up on the humans that interest them so much.  Due to much stricter protocols, often they only came close enough to pick up current music that was being transmitted from the planet.  On their last trip to earth, a tour company full of families found that their interdimensional drives on their vessel suddenly began to go haywire, sucking them towards Earth like singularity.  Before they knew it, they had crash landed in the middle of Armageddon.

One would think that learning aliens from outerspace and not some other dimension would be a big deal for not just humans, but other species.  But, many human scholars believe that the Marlarkoid story doesn’t hold up under inspection and accuse them of being nothing more than mutations whose bodies and brains were scrambled by the revelations.  Other scholars have just simply shrugged off the alien story as being just another day in post-post-apocalypse.  In the case of the legendary majister of the Rock, Waldorf the Groovy, he simply stated to a couple of Marlarkoid visitors, “welcome to the party.”

Society
According to their official history, an estimated fifteen Marlarkoid families and few dozen individuals survived the crash landing, with scattered life pods touching down all over the world.  With no way of returning home in their one-way escape pods and human civilization collapsing like a house of cards during the revelations, they could do only one thing: Hide.   And up to recently, they remained hidden from a scary world the best they could.

Marlarkoids live in small nuclear families.  Since their population is scattered throughout the world, older Marlarkoids are careful to try to protect younger ones, most of whom are now second generation “earthers."  However, this parental protection often leads to overprotection and micromanagement of their children’s lives.  Naturally, younger Marlarkoid resent this helicopter parenting and go on the lamb quite frequently.  While problematic, this has lead Marlarkoid families hooking up to make slightly bigger communities.

The largest known population of Marlarkoids is in Regina, Saskatchewan. There they live in underground structures partially crafted from psychic crystal.  Many Marlarkoids try to make a conscious effort to visit St. Paul, Alberta (http://www.drevrpg.com/2015/05/relic-roadshow-3-st-paul-ufo-landing-pad.html)
in the hopes of a rescue ship landing there.

Other Marlarkloids have tried to find their way to New Mexico in the hopes of coming across Area 51, where some of their past human interactions have rumored to occur.  Many of these Marlarkoids never return or return with never coming close to their destination.

Relations
Being accused of being delusional mutations caused by the revelations, has soured relations between Marlarkoids and some human settlements, thus they tend to interact with more open-minded folks.  Their love of all things human has slowly turned into love of all things Halfling and Feylin.  The former being kind, warm and open hearted to all.  The latter being curious fanboys and fangirls much like Marlarkoids themselves.

Otherwise, they try to hide their true form from most of the normal species, and often find solace in hanging out with the less humanoid species that accept their true nature.  Memories and horrible tales of observing the Necromantic Wars has made them apprehensive of Kamidavers, and any other Living Dead.

Adventuring
Young Marlarkoids often adventure to get away from their clingy relatives.  Many Marlarkoids fall
into the old habit of being a tourist, setting out to collect souvenirs and pictures of this new alien world, sometimes just to annoy the elders at home.  Other more mature Marlarkoids sometimes set out in hopes of finding a way back to their home world, and to confirm if their own history and memories are real.  However, the greatest drive is to find other Marlarkoids for the essential purpose of hooking up and maintaining their sparse population.

Personality
The average Marlarkoid is curious, friendly and overly trusting, usually starting life as neutral good.  As they age they have a bit of a controlling streak that comes out, making them typically lean towards lawful alignments.  While they usually mean well, they will give their opinion on just about anything with the idea it will always be receive cordially.  Otherwise they are, especially young ones, a bit naive and sometimes hard to take seriously because their quirky demeanor.

They are worried about being intimate with other races because as state their sacred texts “it could destroy the world.”  The more likely issue is that they are not biologically compatible with any other species and to go beyond anything more than friendship would be counterproductive to maintaining their low population.

Then there is the notion that perhaps their own history and memories of being an alien species is some sort of biologically induced delusion.  The clear majority of Marlarkoids discount this as nothing more than slander and at worst boarding on hate speech.  Those that accept this notion beyond just as a what-if thought exercise, are almost always treated as villainous outsiders by other Marlarkoids.  These isolated Marlarkoids almost always end up going a wee bit mad, often ending any agreement, with "oh yeah, I'm the evil one! Let me prove it!"  Most of the time this angry sarcasm leading to very long monologue on the nature of the universe as they see it.  Though on occasion it can lead to shockingly unmarlakoid actions.

Description
They are a thin, gaunt race with somewhat humanoid shape.  They have a pair of foot pods and two pairs of tentacle-like arms that are prehensile.  Their face has three eyes that are brightly colored that don’t blink in the human sense.  But they do have nictitating membrane to protect from dust and objects, much like a shark's eyes.  They have a slit of a nose and a small mouth loaded with small sharp teeth.  They have ear hoodies that clamp down, and like most of their biology that points towards being evolved to survive harsh environment either in deserts or underwater.

As a Marlarkoid ages they sprout little cilia all over their green body and a long strand at the top of their head that looks almost like hair from a distance.  As strange as this cilia hair is, their oddest unseen feature is a helium bladder deep in their body.  Given some training, a Marlarkoid can manipulate the release of gas from this organ to perform a variety of weird actions, including a very limited form of flight.

They are also highly mutable, and while some general genetic patterns do exist, one Marlarkoid might be vastly different than another.

When it comes to attire, they prefer hoodies and long cloaks to hide their alien looks from folks who might mistake them as evil monsters in need of slaying.  However, a sizable population in western Canada has taken to wearing cowboy attire.

Marlarkoid Traits
Creature Type:  Aberration (you still have all the normal biological needs of a normal human, such as air, food, water, and rest).
Ability Score Adjustment:  Pick one ability score of choice and increase it by 2 points, up to its normal maximum.
Talent Access:  You may take talents from any species talent tree from a Drev 5e sources approved by the GM, you fulfill all the prerequisites, and a talent you pick does not specifically modify a species feature that you do not have.  This accounts for the odd mutations Marlarkoids tend to have or develop over time.
Age:  You reach maturity at around age 16, and tend to be considered middle age around 60, and live to about 120 years old.  Most markarloid parents will hover and interfere with their children's lives until the child reaches age 30-40.
Size:  Marlarkoids stand between 5 to 6 '6'' feet tall, but are filled with gas sacs and hollow bones, and only weigh 40 to 80 lbs.  Your size is Medium.

Speed:  Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision:  You have Darkvision 60 feet, though Markaloids see in shades of green rather than greyscale in the dark.
Tentacles:  You have two tentacles that can be used like extra arms, allowing you to have additional weapons drawn and perform different actions while your normal hands are currently armed.  You still may only use one two-handed weapon or shield at a time, and your tentacles do not grant you additional slots for items (such as rings, gloves, or bracers) or extra actions without additional training.
Helium Bladder:  Malarkoids have a weird internal organ that fills with helium they collect from breathing normal air.  They may release the gas in "charges" for a variety of useful or comical effects.  A Malarkoid has a number of helium charges equal to their proficiency bonus.  All charges renew after taking long rest.
n Bounce (1 charge):  As a reaction to taking fall damage or landing at the end of a fall of 10 feet or more, you may spend a charge to trigger this feature.  This activation allows you to half the final damage of your fall, and immediately jump (bounce) a number of feet equal to half the distance you fell.  You will fall prone at the end of this bounce.
n Buoyant (1 charge):  As an action spend a charge, and you gain a swim speed of 10 ft. and will not sink under the surface of the water or risk drowning for the next hour, or until you become incapacitated.  However, you cannot dive below the surface of the water unless you are carrying two times your normal carrying capacity or end this effect.
n Break the Ice (1 charge):  As a bonus action spend a charge as you allow a tiny bit of gas out to make your voice sound higher in octave or make odd gaseous noises for next 10 minutes. You may end this effect early as a bonus action if you wish.  This will grant you advantage on Persuasion or Performance checks where comedy might be appropriate, but you will always suffer disadvantage to Intimidation checks for the duration.
n Floaty (2 charges): As an action you spend two charges and gain flight 10 feet (hover) for 10 minutes, until you become incapacitated, or you end the effect early as an action.  This only has a maximum altitude of 60 feet.

République de la Nuit

Note:  The following is an experiment.  It is fully bilingual in English and french.

In the depths of once was known as “la belle province” is a most peculiar kingdom.  A fragment of the immortality of the past playing a balancing act between the living and the undead.  This is the République de la Nuit.

History

There was a time when vampires were the puppet masters of the world.  Like a carnival of blood, they hid in the corners of civilization, obsessing about society and their next meal.

One of the cornerstones of this conspiracy was the city of Montreal.  They used their linguistic isolation to create their own distinct society to isolate themselves from their vampire kin.  They were often considered the “country bumpkins” of the vampire world.”

This isolation saved them from utter destruction.

Times of Revelations

When the Times of Revelations occurred, many locations were destroyed as they were smashed by creatures that showed how low vampires were on the pecking order.   Most vamps were reduced to raiders and small isolated communities.

But the Quebecois Vampires tried something different.  They revealed themselves to the survivors and point blanks pointed out that they were related to most of the survivors and would be willing to help survive in such a hostile land, in return for “donations of blood.”  The living and the dead lived openly in the ruins of the old world and were pulling themselves together.

Then came a difficult situation.

Necromantic Wars

The Necromantic undead was on the march.  These mostly mindless undead armies proved a difficult situation, but there was an option.

After a vote, the Republic capitulated and would present themselves as a small vampire kingdom on their side but would subvert from within.  This gave them the breathing room to start watching from the shadows, checking on intel and hiding from the rest of the outside world.  Info was carefully sent to opponents of the Fallen Lords and it is rumored that their actions were responsible for getting the Rock involved.

They also asked for volunteers.  A sizable chunk of the vampire population deliberately starved themselves to drive themselves feral to give plausible deniability as they raided the necromantic armies for supplies and to engage in guerilla warfare.  They were dangerous to pretty much everybody, but they created a pocket of relative safety.

After the Necromantic Wars, they were in a difficult situation.  They wanted to rebuild, but they also had to stay in the shadows as the opinion of the undead had been forever soured.

So, they are exploring options.  Many have heard the rumors of this place, but only the Rock has any idea of the size and scale of the republic to ensure survival.  The DPP would not respond well to their existence and they are always nervous that the Fallen Lords may rise again.

So, they watch and wait.

Government

Most people think of Vampire dominated societies; they think of hidden cabals hiding using superhuman powers to maintain.   This isn’t the case in the République de la Nuit.  The founding of the republic started with an agreement of a constitution laying down the rights, privileges and lip service to “All sentients are equal.”  They need to run for election every 4 years, but this electoral period only lasts a month.

This is not to say there aren’t issues.  There is a bias towards vampires.   They are often picked because of their experience and political finesse.  Families feud with each other at the ballot (often winning through force of numbers) and even in organized duels, but the system works well enough.

Mortals are most likely employed by the bureaucracy.  They often are employed to ensure the details are followed whereas vampires usually are bigger picture orientated.   They are surprisingly thorough in using paperwork to keep good records.

The Families

Despite being somewhat known for being a vampire kingdom, the population of vampires is small.  This is mainly to not be a large drain on their resources.

The relationship between vampires and humans is that of family.  Most are related by blood and/or adopted by human families, so it makes the relationship symbiotic.  The vampires are often considered grandfathers or guardian spirit of the family.   Afterall without the next generation, they will be no future.

Adoption is common to deal with shortages.  In fact, it is possible to be considered related even if another species.

Albano

Often the most colorful of the families due to their need to wear flashy clothes, they are renown as being builders and usually have a hand in all major public works throughout the republic.  This usually doubles as both demolitions and “prepping the battlefield.”

Bautista

This is the Jock family that works on physical activity and most often end up as heads of the militias and in the Black Ops.

Dupree

These introspective clan oversees the churches and providing sanctuary for their people, both vampire, and humans.  Faith is considered the family business, and many seem to gain the gift of healing.

Horowitz

One of the smaller families, they are known for using urban warfare techniques and have been known for their use of drones to compensate.  These usually appear as small mechanical hands that are painted white.

Levesque

Known as the cerebral ones, they consider the arcane arts to be their domain.  Magisters are very common, and they have a working relationship with the Rock, which often makes them question their loyalties.

MacMahon

An up and coming family that has slowly cornering the market on trade goods, they have been trying to set up trading relationships from outside the republic.

Ouellet

These are the sailors and fishermen of the republic and are known for acting as privateers on their behalf.  They are also known for their Rainmakers and often use the weather as a bargaining chip.

Rougeau
This is the family of law enforcement.  They are trained in the use of policemen and lawyers and have used legal technicalities to gain their seats on the table.  They are also in charge of spying and often have a reach far beyond the Republic.

Schuhmann

Located primarily in Quebec City, they seem to obtain their influence in both the bureaucracy and by building megafarms and using their food resources for influence.

Vachon

They live near the Les Laurentides, a small Quebec mountain chain, and are known for being scouts.   They are responsible for keeping an eye on the remaining Corpsman and to keep them at bay.  They are known for their traps and when they starve, they become lupine like.  Their symbol is a Wolves' head.

Society

The republic is based on the past and often is an attempt to rebuild it.  Outwardly, with a few exceptions, they appear as a ragtag group of settlements that survive by living off the land and bonded by a common language.
These are people that have a few social generalities.  They really like their privacy, preferring to not reveal much to the outsiders.  Despite this, they love to debate and argue about just about everything when within their sheltered communities.   But it is rarely taken personally among family.   Afterall there are bigger fish to fry.

The Blood Problem

One of the ways they have been able to balance their society is through the use of socialized medicine.  They have a series of blood clinics that are used to provide blood for vampires so they will not hunger and go feral.

But the Necromantic wars has had an effect.  Many vampires were reborn and have created a higher population of vampires that can normally be handled by the local population.   This has resulted in raiding parties that attack outsiders for what runs in their veins.

Worse, there are many feral vampires roaming the countryside that no longer recognize kin.  Many of these have taken on bat or wolf-like aspects and are as big a threat to the locals which means most people do not leave at night for their own safety.

The Generational Gap

As bad as generational gaps are when it comes to humans, it becomes twice as irritating when your ancestors are centuries old.  A lot of the newer generations believe they are being herded by vampires as little more than cattle and are out of date.  There is the perpetual legend of the “lost generation” where humans were vampirized and starved to be used as weapons during the necromantic wars and have not provided proper support to “bring them back.”  Plus, vampirism is often a requirement for the “good jobs” and the ultimate in networking.

Now that things are a lot more in the open, it has caused no end of civil disobedience and “Helsing gangs” where mortals attack isolated vampires.

Vampires, in contrast often see their younger relatives as “children.”  They seem to be dedicated to cutting their nose off to spite their faces even if survival is at stake.  Plus, they have the experience and ingenuity to guide their families for long term survival.

So far it has been quiet and small scale because of a mutual agreement against “outsiders” but a lot of repressed issues are bubbling to the surface.  If it isn’t addressed in some fashion, it could cause a republic that has lasted for centuries to come crashing down.

Outsiders – A Necessity.

The republic has started to follow the Rock into the brighter world but has merely taken baby steps.  Most people agree the time has come to reveal themselves to the outside world, but it’s a matter of scale or scope and how much dirty laundry and cultural baggage to reveal.

It is easier to come out to a friend or a small degree of friends, but it always comes as a vulnerability.  Fear of the unknown and a few bad decisions of the past would only make things worse.

Therefore, the official Republic policy is to be friendly but reserved for adventurers within its territory.  They are usually sent to a registration agency.  It is almost more clinical then malevolent, not unlike going to a doctor with a healthy dose of the bureaucrat.  However, once so registered, they are considered “hands-off” by any vampire patrols in the area until they prove themselves unworthy.

Still, membership has its advantage.  Bounties and special contracts often go to adventurers first which usually pays handsomely.  But don’t be surprised if you are used as a political pawn between families.

Finally, Adventurers are often a source of tension with locals that they are “taking their jobs.”  It’s best to try to have a local liaison to “de-ruffle feathers” even if you have your contract.

Military and Tactics

This is the republics' land and they are ever vigilant.   While there are local militias that can be recruited as necessary, there is a small, but spirited armed forces that are simply unique.  Known as the Blood Ops, these are vampires that are trained in special operations and are sent to “defend the republic.”   They have set a network of safe houses, tunnels and zip lines throughout their territory so they can travel quickly.  While they have a few military vehicles, they prefer canoes and cycles for covert operations as they are very quiet.  Communications range from dead drops, radio transmitters, and even trained dogs and pigeons.

They almost never attack head-on and prefer to strike from ambush, use of traps or get a third party involved so they can insist they were never there.

Despite this framework, there is an attempt to make a true armed force to defend the republic.  Many humans argue that they cannot rely on secrecy anymore and it would be better to create a true army.  If done systematically, it would reduce the dangers significantly in the woods and allow them to expand.  However, there is a fear that this will cause the ire of the DPP.

Key Settlements

Montreal

The ruins of Montreal are a major location in the republic.  This was a population hub and while destroyed at one point, has been rebuilt and has become the population hub.

Basilique Notre-Dame de Montreal

This ancient church was one of the largest churches in the republic, has been mostly restored and is a national treasure.  You'd think vampires would not be interested in religious buildings, but it has become a matter of pride.

The religious ground is considered neutral ground for any interfamily meetings and it is considered a great betrayal to attack while on holy ground.

The RÉSO

This was Montreal central business district.  Now it is the homeland of the republic that protects against both the cold and sunlight.  It has rebuilt markets, office towers, convention halls, university buildings, and even a few art venues.   It even has a repurposed Metro for ease of transportation within the area.

Still, much of it is unexplored and the Republic often sends patrols into these areas to route out dangers and change into housing and/or commercial areas for future progress.

McGill University

There has been a dedicated effort to restore this legendary research university.  It is a place of plumbing the depths of knowledge and recovering the past.  Of interest is its medical technology to see if there is a way to reduce feralization.

Mount Royal

The Namesake of the former city, this extinct mountain made by volcanic activity was a place of parkland.  The republic has used this point of elevation to set up a transmitter to gain signals from far away as well as a lookout point.

The Biosphere

Located on Saint Helen’s Island, this artifact of the past was an environmental museum before the Times of Revelations. It was a repository of seeds and plants and has been used to restock the fields.  Rumor has it that a lot of the seeds were created by an ancient and strange plant species known as the harvesters.

Quebec City

This ancient and fortified city was a matter of pride of the republic to repopulate it, rebuild and make it the capital.  It’s stone buildings and winding streets make it feel like it isn’t just from before the Times of Revelations but from another continent.

The Hôtel du Parlement

This eight-story building imposes on the landscape and has returned to provide the political location of the republic.

Citadelle of Quebec

This military installation is one of the overt locations for the republic as it has key strategic value and its first real experiment of a proper army.  Its stone walls make up an uneven star that allows for canon fire but now are used for heavy weapon emplacements. Still, it is mostly run by humans to reduce any complications with the outside world.

Outlying Territory

The Republics Terrain stretches from Les Laurentides to Bai-Comeau: from the St. Lawrence to Chicoutimi.

Most settlements are small villages that have underground tunnel systems to hide their numbers and to conserve heat during bitter winters.

First Nations Communities

There are more than a few first nations communities in the area and even overlaps the territory such as the Attikamek, Hurons, Mi'kmaq, and Mohawks.  As a rule, they range from trading, avoiding the republic, to dedicated undead and vampire hunters.  Many are rumored to be shapeshifters.

Hydro Dams

Hydro Quebec was once a source of much power for the region.  While most have fallen into little more than the ruins, there is a push to rebuild one of these to act as a power source of the kingdom.  It is only the fear of attracting attention is why it has only recently broken ground.  Only time will tell whether it is prosperity or folly.

Monsters of Note

Resisting the Fallen Lords during the Necromantic Wars has left an impact on the land

New Monsters

Lou Carcolh

This large snail with massive tentacles is a chronic problem as it often lives underground.  It stretches its long tentacles and often grabs prey to be pulled into the depths of the earth.  As most settlements are underground this increase the danger of such

Memphremagog

Named after the lake it was originally found, it is a humped sea serpent with a horse-like head.

Nain Rogue

The red dwarf is a demon of some sort that is known as a harbinger of doom, but there is some unspoken agreement with the republic that was signed during the Necromantic wars.  Nobody has been allowed to see the treaty since as it was sealed up in the depths of the Parliament library.

Ponik

This dinosaur-like creature appears to be a cross between a crocodile and a manatee.  It is an ambush predator that has made its habitat across the republic’s many rivers.

Vampire - Chiros

These feral vampires are bat/humanoid hybrids that scour the lands.  From under its long arms is a pair of skin flaps that allow it to fly, and it has two prehensile clawed feet and a projecting maw with
oversized canine teeth.

Vampire - Lupus

These Feral Vampires are responsible for many of the tale of Loup-Garou as when they starved, they took on many of the wolf-like features.  They typically hunt in the deep woods and are feared by most travelers forced to travel narrow paths during the nighttime.

Monsters from other sources

The following are either Dark Revelations – The Role-Playing Game-Specific or from a certain other Monster Manual.

Beaverfolk

These rustic paranoids set up a relationship with the families.  They would use their trapping skills to bring in “desirables” for trade.  Now that things have calmed down and they need to show a more positive face to the world, there is debate about whether to have the braver folk stop their “blood trade” but it currently goes unhindered.

Cats

Despite the myths of Matagot or Mandagot, cats often end up in the republic as adventurers.  They have this bizarre relationship with the families where in return for food and shelter they often act as family pets.   Most felines in the Time after Revelation are very intelligent and would probably take offense if they weren’t treated so well.

Corpseman

Wendigo the wild is the last remaining active fallen lord and his minions wax and wane into the territory of the republic.

Gnomes

Lutin was one of the first nonhuman species to set up shop.  While they live in isolated communities, they usually swear fealty to one of the families where their skills in magic and technology are often envied.

Great Horned Serpents

There are myths of at least one Great Horned Serpent in the Night Republic.  Common locations are rumored the Great Lakes or even Mont-Royal.

Verkhail

There are a local indigenous gargoyle species that often lives in the ruins.  They were considered pests until the Necromantic Wars but bred so quickly that they now team the area.  They sent an ambassador to Quebec to start peace talks, but it is unsure where it will lead at this time.

Will-o-the-Wisp:

The Feu Follet haunts the wilderness looking for prey on starless nights.

The RÉSO

The Hôtel du Parlement
