Hodgepocalypse - Latin America - Part 4 - Strange Places


The following places of mystery are noteworthy for their unusual properties, whether by magic or other means:

The Bermuda Triangle

This triangle in the Caribbean was known in the mythical context for its effects on magnetic navigation.  It is claimed by the Elves of the Caribbean where it has been marked out by buoys to do not enter.  It is rumored that great treasure is located on an island in its middle that requires a riddle to be solved.

The Boiling River

Located in the center of the former country of Peru’s Amazon, this river is noteworthy in that it is flowing of boiling water that flows into the depths of the earth and kills everything that falls into it.   It is rumored to be the home of Mayantuyacu, a powerful jungle spirit with the head of a frog, the body of a lizard, and the arms and legs of a turtle.

Cerro Viruela

Smallpox hill is filled with 5,000-6,000 man-sized holes found in the Pisco Valley on the Nazca Plateau in Peru.  It is a rumor this was used as a place to measure produce and that anybody whom ventures too close will be methodically processed, broken down into base components and stored.

Chichen Itza

A large pre-Columbian city located in the Yucatan peninsula; this mish-mash of architectural styles is a monument to a past long since gone.  It has been resettled and now is a booming city.

Cono de Arita

This natural volcano is in Argentina and looks out of place in its bed of salt, as it looks like an Egyptian pyramid that towers over 400 feet.

Coral Towns

There are a series of towns built on coral reefs found along the coasts of South America in order to avoid the dangerous flora and fauna of the mainland.

Cueva de los Cristales

Originally in Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico, this giant place of crystals have begun to grow and has been begun to spread to the surface.  It may be a similar species as the great Crystal forests of the Boreal Forests of North America.

Dinosaur Burial Grounds

These are found throughout the continent.  These massive open-air burials are usually either Euornithopod or Sauropods dinosaurs that create a place of the dead.  The largest one known is on the pampas of Argentina.

El Peñón de Guatapé

This ginormous rock in Colombia is a physical manifestation that sticks out of the terrain to survey all within eyeshot.  It’s ancient lettering GI is rumored to have once identified a mighty wizard that may live in the tower above.

Ichytheo Point

This small island chain is located in the bay of the amazon is known for its clusters of Ichthyosaurus that use the rocks breaching the water to sun themselves.

The Eye

In Northeastern Argentina in the swamps, is a near-perfect circle of land that turns and moves on its own axis. It now spins as a response to the magic in the area which changes drastically.

Machu Picchu

This former royal residence of the Incas towers over the landscape as it sits perched over the Urabamba Valley.   Still intact generations after the civilization that made it, it is rumored that there is a ritual that is done at the Torreón, or the Sun Temple inside, during the winter solstice, a sunbeam will open a portal to the Dreamtime.

Mano del Desierto

in the Atacama Desert of Chile lies a mysterious sculpture of a gargantuan stone hand that reaches for the sky.  It is a persistent rumor that it moves and may swat those that get too close.

Nazca Lines

These massive large geoglyphs depict animals, plants, random geometric shapes and even straight lines that can be seen for orbit.  Despite the belief that they involved aliens in some manner, the truth is that during the Times of Revelations they began to glow with mystical energy and expanding, creating a massive magical enclosed maze that has something at its center, for good or for ill.



Parque Arqueológico do Solstício

This megalithic stone circle in Northern Brazil consists of 127 blocks of granite and it might be a ritual point used by the Terrorsaurs when they came across.

Punta Gallinas

This series of giant sand dunes create a vast wild desert at the northern tip of Colombia.

Sacsayhuaman 


The fortress-temple complex lies at the northern edge of the former Inca capital Cuzco and is one of the largest ruins on the continent.

Sargasso Sea

This pile of seaweed was legendary for being a place of minimal wind and entangling menace.  Since the Times of Revelations, it has achieved sentience and has entered into an agreement with the Elves of The Caribbean.

Salt Ponds of Maras

A series of raised ponds that are built near Cuzco, these small salt ponds are still being used by locals to mine salt to this day.

Skylodges

This town is one of the more unusual settlements are a series of transparent conical dwellings that are interconnected with a series of metal framework that has only grown since it was used as a hotel.

The Lava Tubes

The Time of Revelations has awoken volcanic activity along the Andes.  The most prominent location is the magma tubes located in Chile, that have created a series of tubes that spray lava into the water at random intervals.  What is particularly bizarre is that it seems to do it in layers, creating a swiss cheese-like matrix along the coasts that often gets settled by dinosaurs and other creatures that seem to migrate before such activity occurs.

Tenochtitlán

Located on an island near the western shore of Lake Texcoco in central Mexico, the former capital city of the Aztecs has been abandoned and is considered haunted by the locals.

The Undergarden

Directly below the amazon is a hollow dirty pocket that is a vast mesh of roots, vines, and other plant material.  It is a land of carnivorous plants as they are all interconnected into something sinister.

Wanaku

This ancient underwater temple lies at the bottom of Lake Titcaca and is almost the size of two football fields.  It lays abandoned, but when it was built to be an automated museum, aquatic robotics act as a sentry against those whom would plunder its treasures.

Xibalba

Originally a cave in Cobán, Guatemala, this the place was once considered an entrance to the Mayan Underworld.  It has expanded to cover most of the depths of Central America and is rumored to be 
one of the many locations that dinosaurs invaded the land from the Hallowed world.

Yax Mutal

Also known as Tikal, it is a ruin of an ancient city in what was once Guatemala’s rainforest.  It has been lost to most other than a few tales, but it is rumored that every so often it appears to travelers to test them.
